Ferrer gradually started to wear down Kyrgios over the next two sets, with the Australian making more unforced errors as the match progressed.

In other first-round matches, France’s Guillaume Rufin was two sets to love up before overcoming Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 2-6 2-6 6-1, Kazakhstan’s Mikhail Kukushkin defeated Slovakia’s Andrej Martin 6-4 7-6 (7-2) 7-5 and Frenchman Stephane Robert breezed past compatriot Albano Olivetti 6-3 6-3 6-4.
