The win confirms the London club’s progression to the group stages of the continental competition but manager Arsene Wenger said his side did not escape unscathed from the encounter.

Lukas Podolski sustained a hamstring injury that will keep him out for three weeks, while Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere also wore knocks.

Wilshere’s injury – an ankle problem – was so severe that Wenger considered bringing him off the field despite having already used three substitutes.

“That’s a negative of tonight,” Wenger said.

“We paid a heavy price on the injury front because we lost Podolski.

“I don’t know how bad Ramsey is, I don’t know how Wilshere responds to his ankle problem, I don’t know, we have to check that tomorrow morning.”

Wenger even suggested his players were on the end of some unnecessarily rough treatment from their Turkish opponents that led to some sore bodies.

“The two tackles on Wilshere were disappointing but we cannot change it now and I think he looks alright,” the French boss said.

“But Podolski is definitely out for 21 days and Ramsey – we have to check how severe his groin is tomorrow.

“I wanted to take him off of course, I would have played with 10 men.

“We were two-nil up, they had to score five goals in 10 minutes, I think even with 10 men we could’ve avoided that.”

As seven-time winners, Milan have become synonymous with Europe’s premier club competition.

But their qualification for this season’s group stages hangs firmly in the balance following their 1-1 draw in the first leg of their play-off against Dutch outfit PSV Eindhoven.

Milan welcome PSV to the San Siro for the return leg on Wednesday, and the Eredivisie club have never won at the stadium before.

The Italian giants will also be keen to atone for is their shock opening day Serie A defeat at the hands of Verona.

Milan struggled against a team who were playing their first top-flight game for 11 years – eventually falling to a 2-1 loss, and coach Massimiliano Allegri knows his side needs to lift.

“We know how important the game is,” Allegri said.

“We will be facing a team that plays good football. They have a young squad and they play very well.

“They created some difficulties for us in Eindhoven, but our performance was good back then and we need to repeat it tomorrow.”

Milan midfielder Riccardo Montolivo said the team was ‘angry’ after their showing against Verona, and are determined to bounce back in the best possible fashion.

“We’ve been talking about the game against Verona from the moment it was over, because we were disappointed and angry with ourselves,” he said.

“We put in a poor performance, so we are really eager to show that we are not the same side who went onto the pitch, and performed so miserably last Saturday in Verona.”

The result means that Arsene Wenger’s side will play in Europe’s premier club competition for the 16th year running, with the win at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday securing a 5-0 aggregate victory.

Ramsey opened the scoring in the 25th minute when he swept into an empty net from close range after Gokhan Gonul had prevented Theo Walcott from shooting with a sliding challenge.

And the Welshman capped a fine individual performance with a wonderful side-footed volley from Kieran Gibbs’ cross in the second half.

Elsewhere, 10-man Schalke confirmed their place in the group stages with a 3-2 victory away to PAOK at the Stadio Toumbas, giving them a 4-3 win over the two legs.

The Bundesliga outfit took the lead in the first half through Adam Szalai, but they were pegged back shortly after the break when Stefanos Athanasiadis slotted past Timo Hildebrand.

Schalke’s position worsened in the 64th minute when Jermaine Jones was sent off for a second bookable offence, but they were once more ahead in the 67th minute thanks to Julian Draxler’s strike.

The Greek side came back again, though, and Konstantinos Katsouranis ensured there would be a nervy finish to the tie.

However, Huub Stevens’ men were unable to find the goal that would have sent them through and their challenge was finally ended in the last minute when Szalai grabbed his second of the game.

Meanwhile, Fabian Frei and Philipp Degen scored either side of half-time as Swiss champions Basel eased to a 2-0 victory over Ludogorets of Bulgaria, giving them a comfortable 6-2 aggregate victory.

Austria Vienna will join them in the group stages despite losing 3-2 at home to Dinamo Zagreb on the night.

Florian Mader put the home side ahead in the fifth minute, but Marcelo Brozovic, Junior Fernandes and Fatos Beciraj looked to have put Zagreb through on the away goals ruling.

However, Roman Kienast scored with eight minutes remaining to send Austria Vienna through 4-3 on aggregate.

Zagreb’s El Arbi Hilal was then sent off in injury time to compound the away side’s misery.

Steaua Bucharest scored twice in the opening nine minutes as they went through 3-3 on away goals thanks a 2-2 draw with Legia Warsaw on the night.

Nicolae Stanciu and Federico Piovaccari scored within two minutes of one another to put the away side in a commanding position early on.

Miroslav Radovic halved the deficit on 27 minutes, but they exited the competition despite a goal deep into injury time from Jakub Rzezniczak.

In-form striker Sturridge netted his second of the game in the 105th minute before Henderson sealed the Premier League outfit’s progress to round three five minutes later by making it 4-2 with a cool finish.

Those goals came after second-half strikes from Yoann Arquin and Adam Coombes had brought their spirited League One visitors level, following Raheem Sterling’s early opener and Sturridge’s first before the break.

Brendan Rodgers named a strong team despite the prospect of a Premier League fixture against Manchester United on Sunday, with captain Steven Gerrard and Sturridge both starting, along with the likes of Glen Johnson and Kolo Toure.

Meanwhile, Notts County boss Chris Kiwomya made two changes to the team that lost to Stevenage on Saturday, with Jamal Campbell-Ryce and Aston Villa loanee Enda Stevens coming into the side.

Liverpool unsurprisingly dominated the early stages and were ahead after just four minutes through Sterling.

The 18-year-old winger collected a pass from Johnson 30 yards from goal and jinked past two defenders before firing low past Bartosz Bialkowski.

Rodgers’ men continued to control proceedings and substitute Daniel Agger – who had replaced the injured Aly Cissokho early on – hit the inside of the post after glancing Gerrard’s set-piece delivery goalwards on 19 minutes.

Sturridge’s movement was causing all sorts of problems for the Notts County backline and the 23-year-old striker was rewarded with his third goal of the season and his ninth in his last eight appearances after 29 minutes with a clinical finish.

Gerrard was again the architect as he guided a perfect pass to Sturridge, who took one touch before firing past the helpless Bialkowski into the top corner.

The Liverpool skipper himself then almost added a third four minutes before the interval, as he lashed a left-footed shot off the post after Sterling had found him with a well-weighted pass.

However, Kiwomya’s side responded admirably after the interval and their spell of pressure paid dividends around the hour mark when Arquin pulled one back.

Manny Smith rose unmarked to head a free-kick back across goal and the Martinique international beat Toure and Andre Wisdom to power a header home.

Liverpool then hit the woodwork for a third time as Toure met another Gerrard delivery, but he could only strike the post when it looked easier to score.

And the home side were made to pay for their profligacy when Coombes equalised after good work from Arquin to force extra time.

Notts County began the additional 30 minutes the brighter of the two sides and their chances were boosted further when Toure was carried off with a groin injury, leaving Liverpool with 10 men with Rodgers having already made all three substitutions.

Nevertheless, Sturridge then found the net against the run of play, as he latched on to substitute Philippe Coutinho’s pass before Henderson – who had come on for the injured Joe Allen – burst through from midfield before nutmegging Gary Liddle and side-footing home.

The 25-year-old forward, who scored eight times in 17 La Liga appearances while on loan with Real Betis last term, joins from Mexican side Monterrey after passing a medical.

A statement on the club’s official website confirmed: “Dorlan Pabon is a player of Valencia CF for the next four seasons after he passed a medical and signed his new contract on Tuesday afternoon.

“Dorlan Pabon will be presented on Wednesday August 28, at 19:30, at the Mestalla.”

The signing of the Colombian – who only joined Monterrey from Parma in January – will go some way to filling the void left by Roberto Soldado’s exit.

Boss Miroslav Djukic has been active in the transfer market in a bid to replace the Spain international, who joined Tottenham in a £26million deal earlier in the window.

Helder Postiga has already arrived from Real Zaragoza, with Pabon expected to compete for a starting spot in Valencia’s attack.

Aaron Ramsey stole the show at the Emirates Stadium by grabbing both goals, wrapping up a comfortable 5-0 aggregate triumph.

Arsenal dominated possession in the first half and Ramsey was on hand to tap home from six yards in the 25th minute.

Theo Walcott then hit the crossbar from a free-kick before Ramsey’s volley made it 2-0.

Boss Arsene Wenger made two changes to the side that beat Fulham 3-1 on Saturday with Jack Wilshere and Nacho Monreal replacing Tomas Rosicky and Kieran Gibbs.

Fenerbahce, meanwhile, included former Liverpool players Raul Meireles and Dirk Kuyt.

Arsenal dominated the early possession but they almost conceded a goal in unusual circumstances.

A scramble in the box led to Bacary Sagna clearing his effort straight against Meireles, with the ricochet drawing a smart save from Wojciech Szczesny.

The home side then fashioned their first chance with a swift counter-attack.

Santi Cazorla burst through two challenges and laid the ball to Wilshere whose pass found Olivier Giroud, but the Frenchman curled his effort wide from 20 yards.

Arsenal continued to probe and their pressure finally yielded a breakthrough in the 25th minute.

Gokhan Gonul tried to prevent Lukas Podolski’s throughball from finding Walcott, but his sliding challenge went straight to Ramsey, who swept the ball home.

Giroud then came close to doubling the advantage seven minutes later when his shot from a narrow angle forced Volkan Demirel into a smart save with his legs.

Fenerbahce almost caught Arsenal out when Emmanuel Emenike broke free on the left and unleashed a fierce drive that Szczesny pushed against the post before Giroud found himself in space, only to fire over from six yards after an excellent low cross from Cazorla.

Podolski was withdrawn from the action a minute into the second half when he pulled up with what looked like a hamstring injury.

His removal temporarily stunted Arsenal’s momentum, and Egemen Korkmaz linked well with Emenike for the visitors before crashing an effort off the crossbar, although he would have been denied by the offside flag.

Cazorla almost grabbed the second for Arsenal in the 63rd minute before Walcott dipped a free-kick against the crossbar.

But with 18 minutes left they wrapped up the win when Gibbs broke free before crossing for Ramsey to volley into the corner.

Arsenal were given a late scare when Wilshere went down holding his ankle after a robust challenge from Meireles, but he recovered to finish the game.

Parish has been forced to deny the suggestions after media reports claimed that the pair’s relationship had irreparably deteriorated amid disagreements around the club’s recruitment policy.

Holloway has made new 10 new additions to his squad following promotion via the play-offs last May, either on permanent or loan deals, with Palace without a point after their opening two Premier League fixtures.

Former Palace boss Neil Warnock, who suggested prior to leaving his last job at Leeds United in April that it would be final managerial post, has been linked with a return to Selhurst Park, but Parish has laughed off the speculation.

“It’s such nonsense. There’s not one ounce of truth or credibility in the rumours,” he told talkSPORT.

Warnock has also admitted to talkSPORT there is no truth in rumours he is poised to come out of retirement to rejoin Palace, where he spent two-and-a-half years prior to joining QPR in March 2010.

He explained: “You always get speculation about every Tom, Dick and Harry.

“I don’t know where it’s come from. I don’t want to get back into it at the moment. I’ve really enjoyed these last few months.

“I don’t think I can cope with the hassle again. The phone is constantly going and you can’t go on like that forever.

“Managers aren’t given enough time at the moment. If you work for 12 months then you’ve done well.”

Comments from coach Viktor Kumykov suggested Shakhter remained underdogs for the clash, however midfielder Roger Canas has since claimed Celtic were “70 per cent out” of the competition.

After their play-off first leg defeat in Kazakhstan, Celtic must overturn a two-goal deficit if they are to progress to the group stages of the competition for the eighth time.

Lennon remains positive ahead of the second leg, and he expects his side to come back into the tie in front of a home crowd.

“Their confidence is dangerous (but) this is a two match tie, and it is disrespectful to my team,” he said.

“I don’t need to motivate my players for tomorrow night, but if they (Shakhter) want to continue the way they are doing then that’s fine by me.

“Looking at the game in the cold light of day, we were the better team (in the first leg), so their comments after it were a bit misrepresented.

Lennon is adamant his side will be able to deal with a motivated Shakhter side and will use the atmosphere inside Celtic Park to raise their game.

“Our home record in Europe has been fantastic and that’s down to good teams on the pitch, and the noise and atmosphere,” he continued. “It takes the players to new heights and we’re going to need the fans to make it an intimidating atmosphere again.

“You have 90 minutes to score two goals. There is no rush to come out all guns blazing and force a goal. As long as we have control.

“Whether Shakhter are motivated or not that’s irrelevant to me.

“We come up against motivated teams every week wanting to beat the champions, but my team will be motivated themselves.”

James Anderson, man-of the-series Ian Bell, Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann have also been left out in order to recover ahead of the tour of Australia, which will see England’s players head down under in October.

However, Kevin Pietersen, Joe Root and Jonathan Trott, who each featured in all five Ashes Tests will play on in the shorter format.

Eoin Morgan will captain England in the absence of Cook as they face a warm-up game against Morgan’s native Ireland before a five-game series against the Aussies.

Batsmen Gary Ballance and Michael Carberry will be looking to make their ODI debuts for England, as well bowling trio Chris Jordan, Jamie Overton and Boyd Rankin.

National selector Geoff Miller said: “Following a very intense period of cricket this summer we have decided to rest a number of senior players which will allow them to recover from a heavy workload over the last three months and to prepare for the tour of Australia which begins in eight weeks.

“This creates an excellent opportunity for players who have impressed in county cricket and for England Lions recently to test themselves at international level as we continue to build a squad ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup which is less than 18 months away.

“There are a number of very experienced one-day players in the squad alongside players who are new to international cricket and we are expecting a very tough challenge both from a strong Ireland side and then from Australia in what will no doubt be a very competitive series.”

England will face Australia in a two-game T20 series ahead of the ODIs, which gets under way at the Rose Bowl on Thursday.

England ODI squad in full: Eoin Morgan (Middlesex) (Capt), Ravi Bopara (Essex), Jos Buttler (Somerset), Michael Carberry (Hampshire), Steven Finn (Middlesex), Chris Jordan (Sussex), Jamie Overton (Somerset), Kevin Pietersen (Surrey), Boyd Rankin (Warwickshire), Joe Root (Yorkshire), Ben Stokes (Durham), James Tredwell (Kent), Jonathan Trott (Warwickshire), Luke Wright (Sussex).

A hugely disappointing campaign for McLaren has left them fifth in the constructors’ championship, just four points ahead of the improving Force India, with drivers Jenson Button and Sergio Perez failing to make it onto the podium at any race so far this season.

Whitmarsh lamented overzealous changes to the cars’ set-up as the main reason for their failures, which have seen them fall from title contenders to midfield runners in the space of one season.

Raikkonen has enjoyed a fruitful campaign with Lotus and had been Sebastian Vettel’s closest challenger in the drivers’ championship until his first retirement of the season at last weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix.

The Finn previously raced for McLaren between 2002-2006 and Whitmarsh has remained enamoured with the 33-year-old.

When asked if he had considered bringing Raikkonen back to McLaren, Whitmarsh told Formula One’s official website: “Yes, we have. Kimi has always been great and I am a big fan of him.

“There is a lot of speculation out there at the moment, so let’s see what happens.”

Raikkonen is widely expected to leave Lotus at the end of the season, with doubts remaining over the team’s ability to raise capital and develop their car.

Red Bull are thought to have approached him about replacing the outgoing Mark Webber, with Raikkonen favouring a move to the constructors’ champions.

Whitmarsh hinted that the switch may not take place, however, and he would be keen to move for Raikkonen, should he become available, having also held talks with him before signing Perez to replace Lewis Hamilton for the current campaign.

“I probably shouldn’t be, but I’m completely open – last year we had talks with him, but for various reasons it didn’t happen,” Whitmarsh added.

“This year we’ve had no talks – yet.

“Obviously Kimi is determined to go somewhere else and I sense that he will not succeed in that goal, so let’s see how he gets on there.”
