Williams ‘super serious’ in Schiavone victory

The American world number one pummelled Schiavone 6-0 6-1 in one hour and two minutes at Flushing Meadows on Monday.

It was a tricky first-up match against the 2010 French Open champion, currently ranked 54th in the world, but Williams’ focus and execution were first-class.

“I’m really excited,” Williams said after the match.

“I knew playing a former Grand Slam champion the first round was a tough draw so I just tried to be super serious.”

Winning the total match points 52 to 23, Williams blew her opponent off the court as she controlled the rallies, only allowing Schiavone three winners.

The 31-year-old American only recorded a first service percentage of 54, however; a flaw that a more in-form player might exploit.

Williams also took inspiration in the performance of sister Venus, who o...

Ferrer cruises as Federer waits at US Open

It was a straight sets victory for the Spanish 31-year-old, taking one hour and 53 minutes to dismantle Kyrgios 7-5 6-3 6-2.

The Spanish fourth seed was tested by Kyrgios early in the contest but managed to break the junior world number one in the 12th game to prevent a tiebreak and win the first set.

Ferrer gradually started to wear down Kyrgios over the next two sets, with the Australian making more unforced errors as the match progressed.

Despite having one more winner than his veteran opponent, Kyrgios slapped 44 unforced errors to Ferrer’s 14 and, ultimately, this proved the difference.

Number two seed Rafael Nadal breezed past American Ryan Harrison 6-4 6-2 6-2 in a confident display.

The 2010 US Open champion was rarely troubled on serve as he won 82 per cent of the points on his f...

Radwanska, Li safely through at Flushing Meadows

Radwanska, who has not been beyond the fourth round at the hard-court grand slam, swept aside her opponent 6-1 6-2 in an hour and four minutes.

The Polish world number four – who fell in the semi-final stage at Wimbledon – was quickly into her stride, and her only scare came early on in the second set when she was broken in the second game by Soler-Espinosa.

However, Radwanska broke back in the third game before doing so again in the fifth and seventh to ensure a convincing victory.

World number one Serena Williams trounced 2010 French Open champion Francesca Schiavone 6-0 6-1 in only 62 minutes.

The lopsided encounter saw Williams win 52 points to Schiavone’s 23 in a powerful display in which she did not concede a break point to her Italian opponent.

Williams’ sister and two-time US Open...

Blake ‘proud’ of career as he prepares to retire

The 33-year-old American revealed on Monday his plans to walk away from the sport at the conclusion of the final grand slam event of the year in New York.

Blake turned professional in 1999 and has since gone on to win 10 singles titles, the last coming in 2007, as well as the Davis Cup in the same year.

The right-hander is currently ranked 100 in the world after peaking at fourth back in 2006.

At an emotional press conference prior to the start of the US Open, Blake admitted now is the right time to bow out of tennis.

He said: “Despite the tears, I’m actually really happy about this.

“It was becoming clearer and clearer most of this year.

“Little things throughout the year made it more obvious to me that this was the right time. Now it’s crystal clear and I’m happy about it.”

He continued...
